The New "d2100" Nodes

The New "d2100" Nodes

Machines and Interfaces

3 d2100 PC nodes (dbox1-dbox3) consisting of:

  • Dell C2100 2U servers
  • Two 2.66 GHz 64-bit 6-Core Xeon X5650 processor, 6.4 GT/s bus speed, 12 MB cache, VT-x (with Extended Page Tables) and VT-d support
  • 48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM (12 x 4GB modules)
  • 2 Intel 82576 GbE NICs builtin to motherboard (1 connected to control network)
  • 2 Intel 82576 10 GbE NICs (each connected to the Arista 7504)
  • 2 dual-port Intel X520-DA2 GbE PCI-Express NICs (82599ES chipset)
  • 2 x 500GB 7200 rpm 2.5" Seagate SATA disks
  • 12 x 600GB 15000 rpm 3.5" Seagate SAS disks (connected via 1 LSI MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i)

Switch Configuration

These nodes exist primarily to provide dedicated storage networks to experiments. Their two 10GbE interfaces are connected to an Arista 7504 switch.

Images and Kernel Support

Soon, we will add FreeNAS-based standard Emulab images to provide a SAN controller interface for these machines. We expect that these machines will primarily be operated in a "shared" mode, in which we multiplex their resources amongst multiple experiments; however, we may choose to also allow them to be dedicated to individual experiments for in-depth experiments covering the entire storage stack -- including the ability to manipulate the RAID card's settings.

Currently, the following Emulab standard images work on the new machines:

  • FreeBSD:
    • 32-bit: FBSD90-STD, FBSD83-STD
    • 64-bit: FBSD90-64-STD, FBSD83-64-STD
  • Fedora:
    • 64-bit: FEDORA15-64-STD

Older FreeBSD and Fedora images will not work on these machines.

Caveats

  • These machines are not generally available to users yet; even once they are, we expect them to operate mostly in a "shared" mode, in which Emulab multiplexes their resources amongst multiple experiments.
